I have done just what you're looking for. Made a little fire flower like you
see at burner events.
You need one of these:

the description says, its for converting an old liquid fuel stove to use
propane. I think they have them at home depot and lowes, but I didn't find
any on their websites. That long rod unscrews, and you're left with a
perfect little valve and regulator assembly with standard female pipe thread
to hook up to.
Then just get some copper tubing and compression fittings, and you've got
yourself a nice hookup to whatever you want!
I hooked up a Tee and ran one side to another valve, and one to a solenoid
valve. The low pressure line goes to a fire flower cut out of copper with
steel wool in the middle to disperse the flame. The high pressure line from
the solenoid comes up the middle of the flower. I open up the valve on the
tank but keep the tee'd valve low. If I activate the solenoid valve I
temporarily get full pressure through the middle of the flower. Makes flames
shoot out of it a foot or so!
Unfortunately it's a 24V solenoid, which is a pain to deal with (I wanted to
make it battery powered) so I never finished it. I was going to mount it in
a flower pot and make it look all nice. Never did!
Anyway, let me know if you have any more questions!
