I've heard good things about Hotel Mirabelle,

It's a block from 16th St BART which will take you to Oakland for the
conference, and three blocks from Noisebridge as well.  Should be
significantly cheaper than downtown hotels.  By all accounts the staff
are friendly and the place is clean and safe.

IIRC the conference is at the Claremont, which probably requires a cab
ride from any other hotels or from BART, so factor that into your cost.

You can also look for a sublet in Berkeley/Oakland on Craigslist.
