They added pig bristle stilts to some of the ants, and chopped of the ends of the legs of other ants. Sounds icky, but it's a pretty interesting result.

Another logistics data point: during the Berlin airlift, they eventually determined the best strategy was for planes to attempt to land, and if they failed simply return back. It was too complex to have airplanes circling making multiple landing attempts.
