It reduces the images to 1600x1200 for web viewing, but it still allows you
to download the full sized image if you wish. It even allows you to download
entire albums at once. The picasa desktop client has an option to resize to
1600x1200 before uploading, to save space. At that size you can store
several thousand photos in 1GB, which is how much space you get for free.
However additional storage is only $5 per year per 20 GB.
