[Noisebridge-discuss] meeting notes 2010-01-05

I am generally pro-ideas-like-this.  I'm also a big fan, as mentioned
previously, of indoctrinating newbies when they show up at the
membership meeting for the first time. My tour and spiel outline is
roughly this:

--Walk in a circle around noisebridge, point out the various spaces,
mention current projects, hazards and lore. "This is the DJ booth, let
me tell you the story of the DJ booth," ... "This is the band saw.
Please don't break it."
--Talk to the newb about their interests and introduce them to
relevant people in the space. "This is Mike, he knows about
everything. Maybe if you're lucky he will help you with something
someday."
--Sit down and give them a basic rundown of how membership and
consensus work. Drop the word "anarchy" and see if they twitch.
Encourage them to get involved. Mention wiki and mailing lists.

Part of this is for their benefit, but it's also for me. It's nice to
get to know people as they turn up in the space. Lately with treasury
stuff I haven't had as much time, but I think it's a solid practice. I
originally thought it would be useful for pre-screening trolls, but as
it turns out, people who want tours are almost universally bright-eyed
and well-meaning. Turns out following discuss is the best way to
discover new trolls. :)
