FYI, I've since closed back up the machine.

Claudia,
As jof points out it takes an insane amount of counterclockwise
unscrewing to get it to open. Even once it's unscrewed, it takes a big
tug to get it open.  (make sure to close it back up very tight when
done to keep the coldness in)

Some us explored how to install labels in the button once but gave up
once we saw how many wires and bits are blocking the way to the
buttons.  We were concerned about breaking the buttons.  It's
definitely worth more more tinkering for a patient and curious soul.

Let us know if you figure out an easy way to slip in new labels.  Even
better please update the wiki page:
