heating is the number one power eater category:
cooking, soldering. (no matter the temperature,
there should be no use of any kind of space heater:
the heat rises and is effectively lost except for
immediately local effects.) real cost is a matter
of how much is used.

motors are second: despite the secondary status
of the motor category, refrigerators use the most
power of any appliance because they're always
running. saws may be the biggest power eaters, but
they're relatively infrequently used, sewing
machines eat much less power per second of use.

lights are a considerable category, especially
the old fluorescents that we're using. new, more
efficient, ballasts cost more than $30 per fixture.
my guess is that each current fixture sucks up about
one ampere, maybe a little more; that's over 100
watts; times 20 fixtures is over 2000 kW. Power
is measured in kW hours. Rates are over $0.20 per
kW hour; all lights on is probably $0.50 per hour,
maybe a little more. times 12 hours is $6.00.

The basic rule is amps times hours. (Figure one
amp as about 100 W (it's more, but not a lot more,
and 100 is such an easy arithmetic operand.)
