In my experience with groups such as ours, there's
a core of people who care and do most of the work. If
the core is attractive (==happy and positive with some
achievable goals), others in the group join in doing
tasks; if the core is unattractive (i.e. bad morale),
fewer others join in.
My feeling is that the core people should be
mindful of themselves (who's in our core?) and make an
effort to stay happy. I think we're doing pretty well
in terms of being positive.
It might make sense that there are core meetings,
probably ad hoc, open to anyone who wants to be part
of the core. (and be wary of identifying the core, as
it can easily appear elitist to others with poisonous
affect).
As an example of one kind of influence: i've got
in mind a number of things to do to help noisebridge
be a better place (including cleaning the two toilet
rooms, among other things). It would be a big help if
there were even one other who would be explicitly
supportive of me and my hopes for doing something or
another--even if just an email nag to remind me to
do and then report/brag (e.g. "you asshole! you said
you were gonna clean the toilet rooms last week and
they're totally filthy! hurry up! get down there
today!" i'd be grateful to get such an email and
would likely get a laugh out of it.).
