[Noisebridge-discuss] OpenSCAD -- Open Source 3-D CAD software

The other night amidst the makerbot cluster, Miloh pointed out OpenSCAD,
3-D modeling software (Free & GPL) that runs on Linux/UNIX, MS-Win
and OS X. It's written by [forgot name] at Metalab, and is useful for
generating geometry for making parts on the makerbot and other things
too.

I was excited to find out about this, as I've been looking for a
decent mechanical 3-D CAD that runs on Linux. It's nowhere near
something like SolidWorks, but it does have a very unique feature
in that you edit a text file to define the shape (think scripting,
version control, etc).

OpenSCAD is not an interactive modeller. Instead it is something
like a 3D-compiler that reads in a script file that describes the
object and renders the 3D model from this script file ... This
gives you (the designer) full control over the modelling process
and enables you to easily change any step in the modelling process
or make designs that are defined by configurable parameters.

Got it up & running on Debian sid in a few minutes.
Pretty Cool ... Thanks Miloh! Thanks Noisebridge!
