On Thursday, March 10th, from 6-8pm, we invite you to come to be informed
and inspired! Fresh from Bahrain and having just rocked TED, the leading
middle eastern cyber-activist Esra'a Al Shafei will share her work using
social media tools to create dialogue and community among rights activists
throughout the region, and the role this work has played in the stunning
historical events taking place.
Esra'a is the founder and Director of MideastYouth.com <
http://mideastyouth.com/> and several other digital platforms that leverage
the power of social networks and media to facilitate the struggle for change
in the Middle East and North Africa. Her platforms include members and
followers in every country in the region and campaign for the rights of the
many religious and ethnic minorities who live there. One of her projects,
CrowdVoice.org <http://crowdvoice.org/> , a global aggregator of content on
protests, was just called out by Inc Magazine as "One of the 5 Start-Ups
Bubbling Up at TED", where she is a Senior Fellow (despite being all of 24
years old):

She has been featured in Time Magazine <
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2049406,00.html> , CNN, the
New York Times, the Guardian <
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/pda/2011/mar/01/ted-2011> and, most
recently, as is one of Fast Company's nominees for this year's Google
journalism prize <

. Her most recent project is an interactive platform for the LGBT community
in the Middle East. As The Guardian points out,"She's barely over five feet
tall, weighs as much as perhaps a domestic cat, and is the scourge of
despots and torturers everywhere.... She's also incredibly brave: Esra'a
can't be photographed because of the danger to herself and her family."
