I always liked the story in "Just for Fun" where Linus first
implements POSIX. Instead of working from a POSIX spec, he compiled
Bash for the 386, ran it on a stubbed-out kernel, and every time it
said "System call not implemented", he implemented it, until he had a
kernel perfectly tailored to run Bash.

Of course there is also the famous story about how Woz used a VHF
signal jammer to train his dorm-mates to stand on chairs, thinking
they were improving the TV reception.

Then there is the Professor's coconut TV; the greatest hacks should
always involve a machete.

But perhaps the title of Greatest Hacker should go to Jesus Christ's mohel?
