    As to the period and ending quotation mark, I've been 
told that for technical writing it's permissible, even 
desirable or even required, to place the period after the 
ending quote character. The source was someone fairly 
expert in typography and technical documentation. 

    As to the crufty mailing list footer, thank you for 
the observation. I never thought of bothering until now. 

    As to other Nazi-phyllic concerns, I like top-posting 
because it saves filtering out the a-pertinent stuff. 
(There are those who clip what's relevant and bottom 
post to each section, that works pretty well but loses 
the entire thread, not that it usually matters.)
