[Noisebridge-discuss] PsychedelicSF

While it's true that Hippies Ruin Everything(tm) I think "hacking consciousness" is indeed a valid endeavour. Despite the touchy-feely, Ren-Faire-juggler tone of the announcement, this is definitely something smart people might be interested in, even if it's not tech-related specifically. Pushing sewing, for example, as the "interaction between art and technology" is arguably disingenuous. While I can't speak to the credentials of the organizers of this event, there are empirical ways to examine mind and the process of thought that can provide deep insight into perception and how our brains work - this isn't just fantastical philosophizing, this stuff is cutting-edge neuroscience. You might find it a helpful analogy to think of the use of drugs in these investigations like staining a slide, or perhaps like exciting a molecule to observe a result. Though Boomer burnouts and their spawn have engaged in "experimentation" along these lines devoid of any scientific merit whatsoever for years, this discredits the line of inquiry no more than we should suggest Noisebridge shouldn't hold a chemistry class 'cause hicks cook meth in their bathtub, or dismantling Spacebridge because rocketry is explosives and some idiot blew off his hands trying to make an M80 once.

Right now we've got about 150 folks on our meetup.com group (www.PsychedelicSF.org), and our event at Noisebridge will mark our 5th or so event. I helped organize a similar group in NYC, before I moved, that grew to over 600 members. Hacking one's consciousness is fascinating and at the heart of the human experience. I hope you can make it to our lecture at Noisebridge this Sunday :)
