Low tech solution: Try replacing one of the three AA batteries with a
dead battery.

The laser and microelectronics draw very little power. Most of the
power is going to drive the motor, and if you drop the available
current the motor will slow down, but there will (likely) still be
enough power for the electronics and laser.
