[Noisebridge-discuss] AED? (automatic external defibrillator)

I'm not a lawyer, but I am an EMT CPR instructor, and have been for several
years. I fully understand the value of AEDs, have used them several times,
and have saved lives with them before. I do not think Noisebridge should
buy or install an AED.

Many organizations are concerned about incurring liability by having staff
trained in AED use without AEDs, but there could also be liability if there
are installed AEDs but no staff to use them. Since Noisebridge doesn't have
staff, we don't seem to face either of these kinds of liability.

I'm pretty skeptical about Noisebridge's ability to maintain an AED in
ready-to-use condition, and to update the software when the manufacturer
suggests it. This is not the sort of thing that we should be hacking with.
Since we're pretty close to fire stations, I don't think that the massive
cost associated with an AED is worthwhile.

If someone at Noisebridge wants to take responsibility for acquiring and
maintaining an AED for the entire lifespan of the device, and wants to be
responsible for taking a collection and paying for it, I have absolutely no
opposition to that plan. I would not contribute to the collection for an
AED.
