Your best bet might be to use one of the cordless drills. Not sure
how hard the snail shells are or the diameter of the hole you're
after, but the drill bit used should probably not be a standard twist
drill. Probably an abrasive burr or "precision" masonry bit would work
better. Not sure how much work you want to put into this, but maybe a
bow drill could do the job? A quick 30-second search brings up this:
