[Noisebridge-discuss] Use of Nitrous Oxide in the space on Sunday night

So I'm at Noisebridge now talking with some people that still feel very strongly that the use of Nitrous Oxide here at NBs party on Sunday was okay.   Sadly, at least one of these people is a member of the space and a regular.

To sum up what happened:  During NB's 4 year anniversary party this last Sunday there were a handful of people near the sewing machines doing Nitrous (i.e. whippets) for hours.  I have never seen anything like this in the space before and I felt extremely uncomfortable, especially since some were regulars to the space.  


I approached these people, told them I was feeling very uncomfortable around this and calmly asked if people could do this somewhere else outside the space.  I know people smoke out front all the time and I didn't see why people couldn't just move things elsewhere.  I told them what they do with their body is their choice and I wasn't trying to dictate anything around that.

"it's a party dude, cmon" was the gist of what I got.  

I had a couple friends in the space, one who rarely visits and they were extremely uncomfortable too.  One of my friends left early because of it.  


I got into a small disagreement with someone tonight and found that ultimately he (and friends) felt whippets were legal (they're not, except strict medical use), 100% safe, and since alcohol was being served I should be upset about that too.

I told him I respected his point of view but I would like to bring this up to a meeting because ultimately I do not want to be around this kind of thing.  If whippets are going to be allowed only at "parties" that's fine, I won't come to any.

There seem to be some very strong opinions about drug use in this space being okay that I was not aware of until now.  I think what people do on their own time is their own business.  But I don't see why a worker/hacker space has to have drugs.  If people feel that whippets, pot, pills, etc. should be used in this space (i.e. not outside) with no questions asked that is the community's choice and I will choose to spend my time elsewhere.
There are plenty of places in SF to do whippets and any other kind of drugs people wish to and I don't understand why NB member(s) feel strongly that they should be done here.   


I will be here until a little after 8 to see if people are coming for a meeting tonight.  I guess they've been informal recently but if anyone wants to talk I'll be around.
