It's certainly impolite to do so, but I wouldn't encourage a policy.  I
will put mailing list posters on, um, involuntary hiatus if I get two
uninvolved folks complaining about it, with at least one of them
privately attempting to fix the problem ("hey dude, your posts are
really not appropriate, chill out") with no effect.
