It would be *difficult* to get non-nerds to use a minimal frontend to a
social network. One of the attractive things about Diaspora is its
frontend (which appears to be somewhat reasonable).

IMO, the software for a *minimal* social network is *already* built.
It's known as either "any web publishing software that supports both RSS
and password-protected entries", or "email". :)
