[Noisebridge-discuss] Gateway laptop(s) left on table in main area

thats a really neat hack.  its too bad that controller and/or work involved in doing that is worth way more than the display.  DVI displays keep showing up at nb all the time and are becoming super duper cheap.  my dream with the displays and laptops is to have NB elevated to a point where dead laptops are fully organized into sections with displays, motherboards, batteries, etc parted out when necessary.  Its happened sometimes in the past and has been a wonderful thing for doing repairs.  One example was a repair I did on a screen that had juice spilled into the display- the reflective backlight screen was messed up beyond simple cleaning and needed new transparency sheets.  I was able to find one just the right size from recycled old laptop displays I (and others) had donated to NB, it was really neat.  Jake donated a huge stack of batteries 1-2 years ago that saw a lot of use as well.

Zach,

I agree that its disheartening to see somewhat usable electronics being destroyed for no good reason.

One idea I've been considering is detaching the LCD and/or housing from the laptop and hook it up to an FPGA/Arduino controller and use it as a generic display. Vendors use something similar for testing spare bare LCDs.

i was working on a gateway laptop (amd x2, with an apparently dead mobo) that is dark blue and silver and i forgot to put it on my shelf.  if someone would leave it in the members area with a note (or not) i would really appreciate it.  or if someone else wants to work on it thats fine too, i just dont want the screen ripped out and the whole thing destroyed like the other laptops i donated a few weeks ago. maybe some tweaker came through and thought that the mercury in the screens could get a nice buzz goin?  man it was a sad sight to see so many destroyed multi core machines.
