for people who want to make an arduino from scratch, i have a number of
ATMEGA32U4RC-AU chips which are what is used on the Teensy, and the
Arduino Leonardo.

It has built-in USB (it appears as a serial port on the computer, no USB
chip needed) but it's in a QFP package - square surfacemount. It's not
hard to solder if you have a board, and I am about to get a pile of
LeOlympia boards for people who want to make their own Leonardos.

The Leonardo bootloader from arduino (which emulates the serial port on
the USB interface of the chip) is open-source free software, but the
bootloader on the Teensy is locked down closed-source and they even use
the hardware fuse lockout so you can't even rip the binary and disassemble
it.

this is the LeOlympia board, which I will be getting a pile of. There
will be kits for building on mondays at CHM if there's enough interest.
