So, according to some nice folks on sci.electronics.basics, I 
misunderstood what rms is.

60v rms across a diode actually results in 60v/sqrt(2) rms. so my answer 
using 30v was incorrect. I should have used 42v, which results in 
approx. 8 watts, instead of the 4 I thought.
