--alone, the motor could not drive a 6". will try again with a smaller 
speaker

Barring that, do you have a series capacitor (say 100 uF) between the 
dynamo output and the audio amp input to block DC?
--Tried that too, with a resistor in parallel after the cap. Will try 
again with more careful values.

without amplification.  (This is easy to fix, if it is what you want.)
