hardware  and software setups?

For the hardware, what are some good search terms? I've heard of using a
low power, diskless computer. I've been out of the loop for a while and
wouldn't know where to start looking. How would I get the ports I'm looking
for? I guess I'm looking for an embedded computer with wifi and 4 ethernet
ports... that sounds rare.

For the software, I'm sure there's a lot of the important stuff built into
BSD but I'm not sure where to find packages that can provide pretty, live
charts. Can you offer a couple suggestions to get me started?



I'm a little concerned that building a homebrew router is a bit like
inventing a new type of hammer-device when a common fly swatter is what I'm
looking for, but of course, the hacking adventure could be worthwhile.
