FWIW I used to store my archive of breakbeat loops in subversion, shared with a few people - it does work, but it was a pain for collaboration because everyone had to download the entire archive to work with it.

For schematics and metadata and such I think what you’re doing is an excellent idea, but there’s real, valid reasons not to store large audio files in github. Yes you do have to pay for S3, but it’s like… 10 gigabytes is $0.95/month. :)

I use my Dreamhost hosting package for all my data-sharing stuff now; I just enabled WebDAV on a directory in my web hosting and now my friends and I can mount that directory as a shared drive in OSX. If you research a bit, you’ll find that you can actually enable SVN-backed version control over WebDAV, so that your fileshare just shows up as a drive in OSX or Windows… but transparently in the background every time you upload or change a file it automatically versions it in Subversion, and you can access the version control with a regular subversion client.

…I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a WebDAV hook for self-hosted git repositories these days.
