This looks like it might make a good basis for a pretty decent DIY
vario/flight instrumentation system. Only $25.

"The SensorTag works with TI’s TPS62730 (step down converter), and
includes TI’s TMP006 IR MEMS temperature sensor, humidity sensor,
pressure sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer."

Use the pressure sensor for altitude, the gyro/accel/mag for vario (and
possibly, if resolution is good enough and drift is low enough, inertial
navigation and groundspeed), and temp/humidity for curiosity. Use your
smartphone for info display, and possibly GPS (to counter drift on the
SensorTag).

I'll be in California from 9/23 to 11/4, roughly. Anyone want to work on
this with me?
