This happens all the time. It's a very common failure mode for these
products. As such, I always bring them back to the apple store. Most of the
time, they just go get another one. At the downtown SF location, they
typically ask for the serial number of the macbook. It must match the
adapter type. I've done this with computers that are 6 years old.

 You should show enthusiasm for apple for best results. They seem to enjoy
helping people who "drink the kool aid." Get angry with them and you will
not be helped. This is an above and beyond service they use for keeping
loyal fans.

If your adapter is pre-magsafe, a fair amount of them end up in the hack
shelves.
