definitely want a charge controller designed for the type of battery
you'll be charging since each type has its own charge sequence that
prevents it from overheating or other nasty failure modes. if you're
running voltage-sensitive 12v loads from a 12v battery (typically up to
14.8 volts when fully charged) you'll want a voltage regulator like
LM7812 between the battery and your load, otherwise most devices that
run on 12V can run happily slightly above or below. good luck!
