Pardon the criticism, no offense, but as a lifelong feminist, the term
"ally" ties my stomach up in knots. I can't stand when we put up all these
demographic barriers, like, "You're a man, so you can't be a feminist,"
just because someone has a penis, that means they are somehow fundamentally
different from women. What about transgender women and men? Are we going
to exclude them, too? Or just cis-gender men? And isn't that the sort of
discrimination we're trying to end?
Ally is offensive because it's highly condescending and patronizing. It's
placing people in that demographic as a lesser class of human, as feminist
being Grade A and feminist ally being Grade B.
And, Hannah, how would you feel if someone said to you, "That's how to be a
good person who can never join our group based on body type?"
Oh, and we need some female football players in the NFL asap.
