[Noisebridge-discuss] Fwd: Problem: individuals digging through Member shelves

Anybody against Daravinne's plan here?

Some of her bulletpoints can be done in parallel. My attempt at a
reasonable timeline, as condensed as possible (I'm not trying to
steamroll over important details, just to cut to the chase, so please
kindly fill in details as needed.)

0. Send out our networking tentacles to see if we can pick up new
lockers on the cheap. (Craigslist, industry contacts, warehouse
sales, etc)

and meanwhile:

1. All Members contacted and informed that the member shelf construct
is being changed. Members encouraged to come claim their stuff,
especially to e-waste or donate anything they no longer want.

2. A "small controlled group" owns and directs the member area
renovation. Every person in that group should be named and contact
info given in every email to members with shelves and to the list.
(In other words, make it Dead Obvious what is going on, who is doing
it, and how to contact someone about it.)

and then (lockers have been sourced, people have been contacted):

3. Lockers physically moved into NB and installed.

4. Member shelf contents removed and stored safely and conscientiously
(hopefully by members themselves), and lockers set up. Communication
to Membership that lockers are ready.

and finally (lockers are in place, extra stuff is left over):

6. $REASONABLE_TIME is given to [former] members to claim things from
a set-aside area. Communication should be explicit that we can't
guarantee the safety of their stuff.

0. Yes, people rifling stuff in the space who are obviously not
working on a project of some kind is always a problem, full stop.
People leaving messes are a problem, full stop.

1 and 2. Member shelves should be a locked resource. Many other
hackerspaces i've been in that has members-only access also has member
spaces (shelves, lockers) that *lock* or that one can put locks on.
the lockers in place of storage cubbies are a decent idea BUT we
should be giving at least that much respect to storage space paid for
by members. If i am paying money to a space, and i am going to store
my project there, i should have a guarantee that my stuff is going to
be safe.

With regards to the stuff that is there already, many of the shelves
belong to people whose membership has lapsed or who are out of the
country or otherwise not coming to the space. this is what should be
done:

- Each member should be identified and contact info found
- Each member should be contacted and informed that the member shelf
construct is being changed for safety reasons and that if they wish to
claim their stuff, they should do so immediately, but in the meantime,
each member's shelf contents will be safely boxed up and cold-stored
until such time as the member chooses to claim it or directs someone
else to handle it.
- There should be a small controlled group owning and directing the
member area renovation, and every person in that group should be named
and contact info given, both in the emails to members with shelves,
and generally around the event of the renovation.
- Appropriate lockers should be obtained. I imagine we can get these
used from craigslist, or some kind of materials reclamation place in
oakland, or from a store liquidation, or something similar. We know
enough people with zipcar memberships or who know a person with a
truck (i know at least 2 people with trucks).
- Member shelf contents should be removed and stored safely and
conscientiously, and lockers set up.
