[Noisebridge-discuss] Noisebridge-discuss Digest, Vol 92, Issue 4

Ruben. re (camera) discussing this individually, I think it'd be best to find consensus at the meeting. Its my understanding that others besides Kevin are also concerned about this. I just think this was a big mistake to put the thing up in the first place without notifying the NB community. I find it ironic if not actually frightening that those who put up the camera are 100% against our governments spying against/ survailing us, yet somehow a camera is installed in a space by its own definition is founded on anarchist principles. The notion of this being an example of do-ocracy  is stunningly short sighted and opens up a lot of possible dissent and misunderstanding. Lets take it to the meeting Tuesday.David

Hello Noisebridge,
A bit late in the posting, but the Mission Go club will be meeting today at Noisebridge again from approximately 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM wherever we fit (probably by the Fox lounge).
Go as in Go/Weiqi/Baduk, the boardgame -- not ze programming language.
We are a Go club that meets at rotating locations around the Mission & sometimes nearby areas.Players of all skill levels are welcome (even if you've never played before - we can teach you!). If you have a Go board, please bring it, although we will try to bring as many as we can~
Feel free to mail me for an invite to our mailing list to be updated on future events.

Hi there.

In an effort to make Noisebridge more awesome, some of us have been
trying to help solve the age old question of, "Is anyone at Noisebridge
there to let me in?" or in other words, "Is Noisebridge alive?"

We've got three solutions brewing that'll hopefully help with this problem!

- Sentient Door
- Semaphore Switch
- ASCII Portal

The idea with all these solutions is to basically tell someone visiting
if the space currently has activity or not without de-anonymizing anyone.

Sentient Door will be a time stamp of when the door up stairs was last
mechanistically opened, we're going to achieve this with a simple
door/window sensor. Semaphore Switch will be a switch that you can
physically flip on or off to activate or kill a virtual OPEN sign.
Lastly the ASCII Portal is a purely in ASCII lowfi store front window
into Noisebridge, if there's a blob of extra Q and T characters sitting
at a Hackitorium table then that might be a hacker on a laptop, or a
mongoose eating pie (regardless, there's a good chance they'll buzz you
in!).

Not everything is working yet, but eventually they'll all show up here...

http://alive.noisebridge.net

Beyond that we're totally open to new ideas and neat tricks on detecting
and communicating awesome activity at Noisebridge without violating
people's privacy.

Thanks!

Is ASCII Portal ASCII cam rebranded? If so, many concerns have been raised at the last two weekly meetings. I suggest further discussion is needed before repointing a camera at the hackatorium.

The other answers to this question resemble alternatives brought up at the same meetings. I prefer the switch for its opt in ability.

Hi Kevin. How about we discuss that stuff in person? Lemmy know when
you're free and we can chat.

You just posted that to a publicly searchable list?

This seems like the proper course of action, IMO.

Thanks for reaching out Rubin. I am not the only concern holder. Are you able to attend the Tuesday meeting next week? This one seems to always inspire lively discussion.

Absolutely not, but I can make time to chat with people one on one offline.

I feel pointing a camera at the hackatorium requires discussion in a public forum. Pushing the conversation to a side channel undermines the concerns raised by others who don't want to meet with you individually. Until all concerns have been addressed, the camera should remain out of operation.

Considering I've heard four separate people tell me how much of a shit
show the last two meetings have been because of how others have poorly
raised and discussed their concerns over this project, I have zero
interest in wasting my time or the community's time. However I am more
than happy to (and have been implored by others to) give you and anyone
else my direct full undivided attention individually in person in a form
that isn't the mailing list nor the Tuesday meeting (and as it turns
out, already successfully have). Even though this isn't a consensus
item, dealing with problems outside of the Tuesday meeting is
classically how we've done it.

Thanks.

However this works out. The camera should probably be off for now.

Hei, kevin.

I'm curious why there is such a strong push for discussion about this instead
of doocratically doing a thing about the camera.

Wire snips are in the toolbox.

If thats not a good course of action, might I suggest having a face to face
talk with those of us involved with the camera? People don't come to Tuesday
meetings to hear well intentioned people get super emotionally involved and
have at each other in the worst way.

Nah, someone's doocratically created yet _another_ super secret special noisebridge clubhouse for that.
Y'all divert discussion from the discussion-list and onto a private slack, stifling open discourse until it bubbles up in unexpected places.  Then all y'all shuffle your feet and "aw shucks" about it.Sure beats having to deal with messages like this!

+1 to not at the Tuesday meeting.  The Tuesday meeting should be for chatting, really about nothing.  Consensus should be reached LONG before it even comes to the meeting, including ironing out any details.  Discussions such as this should only be brought to that meeting when it is in it's final form.  KJS, how about a specific time, maybe on a different day, different time or a different place at the same exact time as the meeting?  This way we can come to an agreement on all the details and concerns of the community.  Mind you this should be a public meeting and in person but not the weekly meeting.  Does that sound reasonable?  I would even love to perhaps moderate this since I have no stake either way!
