[Noisebridge-discuss] Laundry Machine Hack

Thought I would share an interesting hack I did today:

My laundry machine has broken twice (2 different ones over the years) from crappy Lid Switches. They are really just a switch (not even a relay) that closes a live AC wire to cut power to the motor when the lid is opened. With 1000W of power sparking every time this happens with it running, you can imagine those switches don't last long.

Well, I didn't want to wait for another OEM replacement (which will break again too) so I used parts I found around the house to build something better.

It's a 12V power supply from a router, wired to a DC-DC circuit (to use the soft ON from the FET) wired to a 12A 120V Relay. Sure, a triac or FET arrangement might be better, but this has a ton of protection built-in this way, and I didn't want to wait and go searching for parts at radioshack and all.

Something that may be useful to someone maybe !

Replaced the crappy switch that wears out in the AC circuit (lid open) with a 12v switching relay using parts I found around the house. Repurposed a DC-DC converter for its internal FET. - View the full album on Photobucket.

I wired the switch into the Bleach container we never use. Lulz.
