Did this behavior just crop up recently?

I recently switched us back to using Monkeybrains after having
Sonic.net configured for a while.

Either the remote server is disconnecting you, or something in-between
is causing your problem. Try and take a couple of packet captures from
your laptop and the remote machine (perhaps via Servepath) and see if
it becomes clear what's happening.
