It's a power saving measure.  The design of the system forces the
users to aggressively back up their persistent data so the machines
don't waste power when they're not actually being used.

Persistent services can be deployed in a virtual container elsewhere
in the system, but I have to set that up since the self-service robot
doesn't know about it.
