And having both working is not mutually exclusive, nor is it necessary to 
maintain this full separation that you are trying to do in order for this 
to happen

I agree, having a small 8-port managed core switch is not a bad idea.  But 
they do cost a bit.  The Ubiquiti EdgeRouter-8 would be good, but it lacks 
PoE.   Either way we're talking about another $300-400 for a good core 
network to add to/replace the soekris (bikeshed, not minotaur).  Maybe the 
EdgeRouter-8 would be a good idea, and we can use the soekris for 
something more useful than pushing packets.
