[Security] Is this working?

Hey guys,

Time to break the seal on this mailing list. I wanted to mention a few
things, including why there hasn't been much activity.

I'm well aware that this is the worst possible time of year to start a new
group at Noisebridge. Not only is Burning Man happening next week, but we're
in the middle of a transition to a new space, etc etc. This is precisely why
we're holding back on even posting anything to the mailing list until after
the move finishes. There's really not enough room at NB to hold another
event, and the nearby coffee place we met at, Muddy Waters, gets kind of
cramped with a group bigger than 4.

That said, this has been in the works for a long time. There's a lot of
interest in security of various forms. Many NB participants have given talks
at security conferences, been involved in security related groups, or just
had general interest. One issue is that security geeks tend to be very busy,
and it's hard to make time to meet. However, it's important that we do so,
because it will encourage collaboration.

There are a couple things in the works. First, we have CTF images from mcfly
in germany, and I'm working on getting some of the DefCon CTF images from
vyrus. We also have the DC3 forensics images we haven't had time to mess
around with. In addition, there's a lot of malware we could look through.
Micah suggested we go through security examples in a few books, or go
through milw0rm and test live exploits, and maybe look at existing software
for new vulnerabilities. These ideas fucking rock. I'm also very interested
in helping someone put together a talk for NB (5MoF or otherwise) on
security in general.

As far as I'm aware regarding the new space, JSharp and a few others are
working on setting up a hazardous network (a network that is basically a
24/7 wargame, where you can root others and be rooted, etc). Also, there's
been interest from spaces around the world in setting up a global VPN for
sharing ideas. Obviously, security will play a very heavy role in this.

In any case, although I should probably be devoting every waking moment of
free time to finishing my Burning Man camp stuff, I think we should meet at
Muddy Waters around 8pm on Thursday (unless NB is actually empty). I won't
be around next week, but anyone who is should try to meet up. One the new
venue pulls into shape, this group is gonna be fun.

Later,
aestetix
