Hi guys,
Sorry to plug this here, but I thought you guys might be interested since
this is about food and it's only 2 blocks down from NB (18th & Guerrero).

In short, my students are having their cookbook memoir release and reception
next Friday, and there will be some tasty food provided by La Cocina chefs.
It's free to the public and you can stop by at any time between 3-6pm, so

*CCA ENGAGE program presents the Stirred + Simmered Project: A collaborative
project between CCA students + La Cocina*


SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — December 2, 2010

The California College of the Arts Community Arts Program in collaboration
with the Center for Art and Public Life’s Engage at CCA initiative and the
La Cocina incubator kitchen will present the CCA’s Community Arts Graphic
Production 2010 fall class’ Stirred + Simmered Project Exhibition + Book
Release on December 17, 2010, at the 18 Reasons Gallery in San Francisco.
The one-day exhibition and reception is free and open to the public between

The Stirred + Simmered project is an investigation of culinary narratives by
students of the Graphic Production course within the Community Arts and
Diversity studies program. Using ethnographic research and interviewing,
each student sat one-on-one with chefs from La Cocina’s Food Business
Incubation program to hear first-hand about the experiences, motivations and
meaning surrounding their recipes, business and culinary practices. Back in
the studio, students were challenged to experiment with typography,
pattern-making, layout and creative writing as a way to synthesize their
research into a visual story in which to share with the larger community.
These stories and recipes have been collected into a visual cookbook memoir,
which will be available for purchase starting December 6.

Food and Design feed us in some way. Recipes are more than just food, and
design can be used for more than just advertising—they can both unveil rich
stories and serve a greater purpose in our society. This project attempts to
exemplify the power and possibility of graphic design to benefit
communities, educational needs and social causes through the shaping or
influencing of behavior and perception. It also presents graphic design as a
way to illuminate and talk about issues of diversity, culture and migration,
as well as the social, economic and cultural role that a graphic designer
plays within communities and the organizations that serve those communities.

This exhibition and book release reception will feature the design work of
17 CCA fine arts undergraduates from a diverse pool of disciplines,
including Community Arts, Film, Graphic Design, Jewlery/Metal Arts,
Photography, Industrial Design, and Visual Critical Studies. The exhibition
will showcase each student’s story of their partner client, the final
Stirred + Simmered Cookbook memoir, edible food samples of the featured
recipes and a raffle to give away 3 signed copies of the Stirred + Simmered
book. A limited edition number of books will be available at the reception
for purchase and signing by the designers and chefs. Pre-purchased books may
also be brought to the reception for signing.

The relentless contribution of this interdisciplinary group of students is a
good example of how community projects like these can happen—so come
celebrate their efforts by engaging with the community! Come join CCA and La
