[Tastebridge] Coffee grounds for mushrooms

It does not surprise me that the sterilized bags colonize faster.  Any bag is like a battleground between the mycelium, bacteria, and other fungus - a battle for food (i.e. energy) basically.  And the less sterile the substrate at spawning, the less microbial advantage conferred to the spawn, although some substrates are only pasteurized because they tend to fill up with bacteria known benign to the species mycelium being grown and also protectively competitive against other bad guys (you know, the enemy of my enemy is inadvertently my friend).  In terms of energy expenditure, waging a battle is taxing so will slow colonization.  In addition heat renders most substrates more imminently digestible to fungus, thus speeding colonization.  I am not sure how this happens chemically or physically, but I have noticed it is particularly true of woody substrates.  I also would suspect the Spawn Mate, which is normally a timed release of
denatured protein, would "leak" its goodies faster if exposed to a pressure cooker since I do not think it was really designed to be added to a substrate before sterilization or pasteurization, rather only at spawning.

Oh, yes! The bags we cooked have a lot more colonization.

(Imagine these not blurry or upside-down)

I just realized I'm going to be in  Monterey next week, won't be able to make the meeting, so here's my update: I got the low power linux box ( slug, NSLU2) running, we can hook up whatever sensors we want to use (http://linuxaria.com/howto/arduino-serial-ethernet-nslu2?lang=en), a cam with either streamer or webcam (modules already installed, http://nslu2guide.blogspot.com/2010/01/webcam-on-slug.html). It's probably best to upload/store them elsewhere since it's a bit limited -- I am happy to pass along login details to anyone who wants them.

This looks great! Dana, did you see any difference between the bags we pressure cooked and the ones we didn't?

I will also bring bags, hydrogen peroxide, digital scales, a syringe, oyster spawn, and sealer.

>>>I committed to delivering 10-20 pounds of dried, used coffee grounds tonight. Unfortunately, the weather was unsuitable for drying the grounds this week on the days that I would have been able to dry them. The weather outlook looks good for this week but unfortunately I won't be able to have them for tonight. I could still try to obtain some grounds today but I won't be able to dry them. I'm not sure if it makes sense for me to bring more wet grounds tonight since someone else has already committed to bring them but I'm happy to try to obtain them if someone thinks they'd be useful.
