I'm not an expert on floors, but I did spend a good chunk of the
weekend crawling around on my knees looking for lock parts over there.
 Here's what I saw:

 - Lint
 - Beads
 - Sharp metal needlelike objects
 - Lots of 1/8"-1/4" gaps between the existing boards

Looking at my pants, I see that the knees I was crawling around on
didn't pick up anything sticky or gross, just lint and dust.  The
needles are all in the cracks so I don't think they're an immediate
concern.

I think that one of the requirements for any solution involving the
floor should be the ability to easily retrieve small parts that fall.
Right now, the cracks and existing crud in the floors makes that
pretty hard.  Some of the cracks seem to drop below whatever's holding
the floor up, so in some cases I can imagine that a dropped part will
be irretrievable.
