Got my first look at a BrainPort yesterday. When placed upon the tongue it allows a blind person to see via a grid of electric active pixels. Here's a photo of the grid that goes in the mouth as well as the goggles with camera: http://twitpic.com/8pwogl
The batteries and circuitry come in a separately worn enclosure. Interestingly, this enclosure appeared to be 3D printed rather than injection molded (the resolution was quite fine, so a really nice quality 3D printer). It's an expensive device, apparently these cost around $7k each.
The owner said that while you can use it to make out letter and such, other things such as navigating hallways or trying to find walls are more challenging. So cool device, but leaves lots of room for improvement.
