Well said, Luce. However, there is yet another (perhaps more graceful) way of achieving immortality/an "eternal soul" that does not necessitate the creation or continuance of an ego, and that is to align yourself with omnipresent forces or archetypes, and allow them to carry you through the ages.                                
                                                              
That little doggie there was my way of demonstrating this. I rose him from a swamp in Death Valley and delivered him to Noisebridge, earning him a form of immortality independent of his own conscious will.

That coyote did not worship, acknowledge, or obey my commands, but I was able to grant him a form of immortality nonetheless. There are other forces in this universe that will do this as well. As humans, you are uniquely suited to better position yourselves for this chance than lesser animals that do not create novelty of their own accord.
