I see your point ... so there's actually a valid reason to be
restrictive with uploadable file formats.

Well, if you try to upload a file, only certain file formats are
allowed,
which is a hassle.

For example, you can upload
https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Image:Spam.jpg
with no problem whatsoever, 
but a plain ASCII text file will give you a headache, so workarounds
like
https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/PIR_motion_sensor_frontend_SPICE_simulation
or
https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Image:PIR_review_001.doc
are necessary.
