I used GEDA for my board design and found it to be much less painful
than running Windows; YMMV. (I'm especially bad at running Windows,
though, so I hope nobody takes this as advice.)

I've been meaning to run a GEDA tutorial course at Noisebridge.

It's my impression that GEDA has gotten more friendly over the last 18
months, and I thought I heard tell of a new GPLed PCB layout tool, but
now I can't find a link to it.
