My 2 cents:
Ning is a pretty handy little platform if you want to get a social
network up in a hurry. This can be really useful for things like "we're
organizing an unconference, we want a communications medium for
participants, and we think our audience will prefer forums to mailing
lists." BarCamp Baltics did this, and as you might expect, in the two or
three months leading up to the event itself there was a flurry of
activity, most of which dropped off not long after the conference
because people who'd connected in person stayed in touch via other
methods. Was it useful? Absolutely; I did some of my preconference
planning that way. Did it continue to be used? No.
For longer term stuff ... *shrug* I'm not the person to ask. It has the
look and feel of a Facebook clone, and I'm pretty indifferent about
Facebook. YMMV.
