in small quantities? sparkfun has the GP2Y0A21YK (10cm to 80cm) for $10.

acclerometer: i'm using arduino. i don't want to use the I2C or SPI 
library, so i'm limited to analog output sensors. i think the best i can 
do is about $30 for ADXL320, also at sparkfun

what are some other fun sensors for teaching? i already have 
photoresistors, the flex sensor, the stretch sensor, piezo snap sensor, 
ball tilt switch, IR interrupt sensor, reed switch (cheap ass magnetic 
sensor).

pressure sensor is a little too pricey, and you can get pretty creative 
with a spring or rubber band and a standard pot.

rfid a little too advanced. mine are the basic classes.

suggestions for DIY sensors also fun.
