UCC's solution to this was a soda machine with electronic debit
accounts. While attaching a soda machine to the Internet no longer has
the cachet it had 20 years ago, it still solves the cash box problem -
and it's also a fun project.

For bonus points, get one with a cash counter, so people can pay
memberships through it. The only real downside is footprint...
