I like the idea someone floated (Andy?  Steen?) of a laser scanner
kill-zone.  Hook up a standard light motion detector so that it makes
a tiny "bzzt" sound when it triggers, then runs a grid of laser light
across the sidewalk.

It would be awesome if it actually tracked people, but simply laying
down a grid of highly visible laser light should be enough to deter
most troublemakers.
