[Noisebridge-discuss] Build Team Progress

Hi Noisebridge,

Meetings last night and the night before yielded lots of fruitful discussion
and some interesting experiments! Loads of people have ideas about what the
new space should look like, and what we should do to make it look like those
things!

In amongst the many ideas, it became clear that there are some things that
are core to our ideas of the shape of the space:

1. A working kitchen -- Talk seems to be leaning toward "commercial
kitchen"-style setup, with stainless counters and sinks, rather than the
"home-kitchen" style we have now.
2. Better bathrooms (although what "better" means hasn't been well defined,
except that we need a shower)
3. Classrooms or Collaboration rooms ("Co-labs") -- more than one
4. An electronics workspace
5. A shop space
6. Small spaces suitable for retreat / "getting work done" without being
social
7. A big meeting / party space where lots of us can gather.

Lots of conflicting input around philosophy; specifically, people love the
fact that 83c is very open and forces collaboration, but at the same time,
everybody hates the fact that you can't do anything without involving
everybody in the whole damned building. So clearly a fine line is to be
walked here.

So far, the shop spaces (electronics and dirty-shop) both seem to be aiming
at a layout that includes a big central work table, with specialized
machine-stations and storage around the walls of the room.

There've been lots of more and less fanciful ideas about the actual layout,
and I expect these discussions to continue for a while yet.

A question that arose was whether we want to do anything about the floors
before we move in. They're in rough shape. Jim suggested that perhaps we
add "floor refinishing" to the list of things we negotiate for with the
landlord, or barring that, is something he'd be interested in taking on (he
estimated the work at about a week, and the cost for a DIY job at about
$1000). This is all contingent on whether we care about the state of the
floors; so what do you think, Noisebridge? Do we care about the floors?

There are groups forming around various aspects of the things that need to
be done, and those groups need people to be part of them.

Electrical -- Obviously there's electrical work to be done. Talk to Jim and
Rachel if you'd like to be involved in working on the electrical.

Kitchen -- We need to build a kitchen, and someone needs to take ownership
of the interdisciplinary "build a kitchen" task and sort out what needs to
be done to get this done. Someone is needed who will take ownership of this
effort.

Bathrooms -- The bathrooms are inadequate. A team is needed to, first, sort
out what we want out of a bathroom, and second to figure out how to do it.
Talk to Crutcher about this one.

HVAC -- Principally, we're intersted in the "V" -- several of our spaces
should be well ventilated; this means running pipes and stuff. If you're
intesrsted, talk to Ben.

Walls -- The walls team is basically in charge of demo-ing and building
walls; but first it means getting people to agree on what walls need to be
built :) If knocking down and building both walls and consensus seems like
something you're interested in, talk to me.

Networking -- Matt is leading the charge to get the space networked. Please
talk to him if you're interested in helping.

Lastly, there will be more meetings and discussion. The next "planned"
meeting about this is going to be Friday night from 6 on; this will
eventually collide with Shop Class, but at worst, it means that you'll learn
something about the tools needed to do the work we're discussing! Don't
feel like you have to show up at 6 on the dot, these are open ended
discussions intended to generate more emails like this one, which is
intended, in turn, to generate more discussion!

Discussingly yours,

--S
