at the cost of possibly extending another 'holy war' (which i've already
given up on fighting here at work). 

this is like tabs vs spaces. either is fine, but mixing them is what
causes 'problems'. to wit

line 1 is in response to line 12. it lacks an explicit direct object,
but the referent appears to be line 12 (the furthest line away). if
there was 'one true style' then the layout would be:

 1 according to whom?
 2 > not forbidden == nice/polite
 3 >> don't oppress me

or 

 1 >> don't opress me
 2 > not forbidden
 3 according to whom?

either way the 'flow' of the discusssion would be clearer (to me) than
it is when the styles are mixed.
