http://blog.noisebridge.net

Currently it mostly contains posts/photos from my blog and a thing about
Orion's skullie throwies.

Do you do cool stuff at Noisebridge, you're welcome to post about it!

Two ways to post:

1. Post directly to the blgo with an account.
2. Syndicate a filtered Noisebridge feed from your current blog.

If you would like to just have an account and create posts exclusivly
for the blog, please reply directly back to me with what email and
username you'd like to use.

If you already have a blog that will contain posts about Noisebridge,
send me a URL to an RSS feed that has posts filtered about Noisebridge
to me, and a username you want them posted as.

Anyone seen them? I wanted to hand out a bunch last night at the 1 bit
music thing as there were a lot (more the normal) of people new to the
space and very interested in coming back, wanted to see a list of
classes in the space.

Splendid idea everyone!

Let's have a CNC workshop where we engrave a logo for them, and folks
can learn the toolchain.

1. What's a good time? Is anyone around next week during the holidays?

2. Let's get some engraving plastic from TAP plastics. Anyone want to
handle that? Contact me off-list.

P.S. The circuit board I milled out works great! But the process
isn't really a good substitute for a good board house. I will write up
details when I get a free moment.

I am really uncomfortable with the phrase "appear to be unused" in
this context. Just saying.

We are totally out of stickers. But 5,000 more are on the way! 2000 B&W, and 3000 Red & Black. The White ones will arrive at our PMB (at 2215-R Market St. #235) on Tuesday. The Red ones are going to take about a week longer.

Mitch.

So, as a hypothetical experiment....

If someone were to want to be very excellent to another member, and
remove one of these car boots from a car, without damaging the car,
and with an emphasis on speed, subtlety and effectiveness, how would
one go about doing this?

By car boot, I mean the locked stopping mechanism Cities put on cars
when they are illegally parked for too long.

In some cases, the best bet might be to remove the whole car including the
boot:

YMMV

Here's the summary version:
http://www.offroaders.com/news/Dolly-Man-Audi-Booted-APS.htm

Guy gets booted, tells the rentacops he's moving his car to his garage
and to pick up their boot when they want to. They threaten to sue for
theft, but cops say since he told 'em where it is and invited them to
take it back, they can fuck off.

The full thread is worth the read. It's epic win.

On topic: Since they probably record serial numbers vs plates, you
want to also not damage the boot. Otherwise they'll sue you for
destruction of property or some such bullshit. It's a weird area of
law, where you can fuck someone over without any police power, but
they're the ones who can't do anything about it or else they face
fines / arrest.

I wonder what'd happen if you booted the booters?

Also, I wonder if they're vulnerable to standard lockpicking
techniques. I've never actually seen the lock on one of 'em up close.

According to Universal Boot (Sabodoin Manufacturing Inc in Montreal) they state that "Any padlock will fit"

This means that ultimately they can be compromised. It depends on the make and manufacture of the lock...

The problem though is that the tickets are still in the system with the vehicle registration number and plate numbers.. So if the auto is moved but the tickets aren't paid they will likely put a warrant out.

Actually, I had always wondered what would happen if you bought your own
boots (of course, with the keys to unlock as well) and booted all four
wheels right after you park. You'd be unbootable AND untowable, and
moreover, you could leave whenever you wanted.

That depends who issued them.

Only police have the authority to issue warrants / arrests, and actual
tickets are technically "bail" for a criminal act. (Read a real
ticket; that's how it's phrased in the fine print.)

For a private party booting (e.g. the POA thread above), it's an
entirely civil matter. The only enforcement powers they have are if
you fuck up and damage / steal their boot (in which case it's plain
theft and they complain to the cops). If you take off their boot
without damaging it, and leave it there for them to collect, I don't
think they can do anything about it unless you have a contract with
them saying otherwise.

For cop booting, that's another matter entirely. I don't think that
the act of (non-destructively) removing the boots itself is illegal
(someone correct me?), but you do have to deal with the ticket, or
just like any other cop ticket it will eventually get either taken off
your DMV fees, levy your state taxes, or (if you have a lot of
tickets) result in an arrest warrant.

If you care, I'd suggest going here to ask:
http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=78 - it's
a cop subforum of the main SF Bay Area motorcyclists' forum, and the
cops there are very helpful about explaining anything related to auto
law.

Ooh, I'd love to help out with this, or at least learn the toolchain. Can't
make it to Tap Plastics, though.

Is there anyone planning on going tomorrow who can give me a ride? I'd love
to go, but challenges to getting there are pretty crazy right now.
